If it was spelled gitarra it would be pronounced вЂњ hee-TAH-raвЂќ.Д«ut hold on: what if you donвЂ™t want the вЂњuвЂќ to be silent? ThatвЂ™s where the diaeresis steps in. That extra вЂњuвЂќ is silent вЂ“ itвЂ™s just there to tell you that the вЂњgвЂќ should be pronounced like a regular вЂњgвЂќ, not like a вЂњjвЂќ. Spanish does this by sticking a вЂњuвЂќ in the middle, as in as in words like guitarra (guitar) and manguera (hose). To understand whatвЂ™s going on here, we need to consider how the вЂњgueвЂќ and вЂњguiвЂќ letter combinations are pronounced when they donвЂ™t have diaeresis. More tellingly, that вЂњГјвЂќ always comes immediately after a вЂњgвЂќ, and immediately before an вЂњeвЂќ or вЂњiвЂќ. Here are the ones youвЂ™re more likely to encounter:Дid you spot the pattern? In all of these words, the diaeresis appears above a вЂњuвЂќ. Truth be told, there arenвЂ™t many words in Spanish that use a diaeresis. Suffice to say that Spanish has no umlauts, only diaereses, as seen in words like pingГјino or vergГјenza. Sometimes people call it an umlaut, but technically, an umlaut and a diaeresis aren't the same thing, despite looking identical. This symbol вЂ“ two dots above a letter вЂ“ is called a diaeresis (pronounced вЂњdie heiressesвЂќ). What English speakers call a вЂњtildeвЂќ, Spanish speakers call la virgulilla or la tilde de la eГ±e.
